If you have kids or a naughty pet, you're bound to end up with bent or jammed blinds at some stage. Not only does it look unsightly, but it also ruins any privacy or sun protection that you once had! But never fear, Harvey is here (yes, I talk about myself in the third person).
Your guide to DIY blind repair
How to fix bent blinds
When it comes to fixing bent blinds, start by removing them from the window frame. You can leave them up, but it's definitely easier if the damaged slat is placed on a flat surface! From here, there are a few different methods to try depending on the problem and the product.
Venetian blind repair
Smooth out the bend by applying heavy pressure to it. If the slats are curved, you may need to use a dowel to shape your blind back into place.
How to fix vertical blinds
PVC: To fix PVC vertical blinds, remove all bent vertical blinds and four unbent panels, then fill a bathtub with hot water and submerge the bent blinds into water for two minutes. Then, remove the blinds from the water, sandwich them between the four straight panels and clamp together with clips as the panel cools for around 10 mins. Repeat this process until all of the panels are straight, just remember to dry all of the panels with soft cloth before reinstalling.
Other styles: When it comes to verticals not made from PVC, we can supply individual vertical blind replacement slats. Our range features heaps of different colours, and the slats start from just $3 each.
How to lower stuck blinds
Wondering how to fix blinds that are stuck? You can try a few different methods to see what works for you.
Tug (gently) on the cords: Carefully pull the blind cord toward the centre of the blind, creating tension as you lightly tug to release the blinds.
Remove the blinds:If the above method doesn't work, remove the blinds from the bracket to access the locking mechanism. Then, with a flat-bladed screwdriver, press down on the small metal roller (the pawl) to move it to its lowest position on the track.
Roller blinds repair
Common issues with roller blind operation often include the fabric roll getting stuck, not staying in place or moving too slowly. All of these problems are generally related to the springs inside the chain drive system, which can be easily replaced.
Fixing jammed vertical blinds
Blinds not budging? Here's how to fix vertical blinds that are stuck within minutes.
- Find the source of the jam and ensure vertical slats are properly aligned in their individual clips.
- Make sure none of the slats are tucked behind one another, then add silicone spray into headrail and open/close your blinds repeatedly to distribute the silicone evenly.
Fixing broken timber Venetian blinds
To improve the unsightly appearance of a cracked slat, simply replace it with one from the bottom!
- Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the plugs at the bottom of the blinds that cover the lift strings, pull the string through hole and untie the knot.
- Remove lift string, take out broken slat and insert your replacement slat.
- Re-thread the lift string by making sure you follow same course through the slats.
- Push the string back through the base and tie off each side, then secure the plugs with a hammer or rubber mallet.
Fixing broken lift cord
Broken lift cords can be a huge pain, considering it means you can't lift the blinds up! If this happens to you, all you need to do is replace the cord with a replacement string from your local hardware store. If the tilt cord is jammed, check the top of the head box that the cord has not jumped off the reel. Easy!
