Styles, colours and fabrics are some of the obvious things to consider when buying new blinds, but have you thought about slat sizes? When buying blinds, many customers tend to overlook the size of the slats, instead opting for the standard size on offer without considering how different sizes can improve their window's appearance and function.

How to choose blind slat sizes
When determining slat sizes for your new blinds or shutters it's wise to first consider what's important to you in a window treatment. For instance, in the bathroom, privacy is key; in the living room, light control may be preferable. We've listed some of the most popular motivators below to help make your decision a little easier.
For more light: Smaller slats
If natural light is what you seek, then smaller slats are the choice for you! You may think that larger slats are the way to go for more light, but unless you plan on leaving your blinds tilted open 100% of the time, thinner slat blinds are the way to go. Thinner slats like our 25mm aluminium Venetians or timber-look nova blinds provide more places for light to enter the room while protecting your privacy at the same time.
For smaller windows: Smaller slats
The ‘standard' slat size is 50mm which fits most windows, however if your windows are on the smaller side this size may appear too big for the window. Slimline slats like our 25mm aluminium venetian blinds are the perfect match for any small or narrow windows, as they create the illusion of length.
For big windows: Larger slats
When you have a bigger window, naturally you need more blinds to cover the surface area. With so much space to cover, any slats smaller than the standard size tend to overcrowd and overcomplicate the surface. A great option for big windows are our shutters is aluminium or basswood, which feature larger slat widths and are relatively lightweight.
For increased privacy: Smaller slats
In rooms like the bedroom or bathroom, privacy is essential. Larger slats are not typically effective at providing privacy when open, although they offer considerable privacy when tilted up or down. Smaller slats have less room between the slats for onlookers to see through even when the blinds are open, making them a more suitable choice.
For a clearer view: Larger slats
One of the few downsides of thinner slats is that they obstruct more of your view compared to larger slats. So, if your window view is too picturesque to cover up, opt for wider slat window coverings like our 127mm vertical blinds or our 114mm basswood shutters.
For sliding doors: Vertical blinds
If your home or office features a sliding glass door, vertical blinds are an efficient and stylish way to cover it. Unlike Venetians and shutters, which feature horizontal slats, vertical blinds consist of vertical fabric slats which are attached to one smooth tracking system. For access between the door and the outside world, simply pull the blinds to one side in one swift motion.
Aside from being incredibly practical, these indoor blinds are also as affordable as they come. We even offer replacement vertical blind slats online for as little as $3 per slat so that you can easily replace damaged slats.
