There's no greater feeling than cosying up on the couch with a warm mug in hand on a wild winter night. And what better to fill that mug with than some mulled wine! Not only will it warm your bones, but it'll also fill your home with a delicious aroma.
Top Tips: How to make mulled wine
Before you heat up the stove, check out these key tips for serving flavoursome mulled wine, every time.
-
Reach for the right red: Wine is the key ingredient in this recipe, so it's important to pick the perfect drop. Look for a decent quality bottle (over $10 but no more than $30) of either Cabernet Merlot or Grenache. These varietals are fruity and full-bodied enough to complement the other ingredients.
-
Take your time: While you may be tempted to crank up the heat, good mulled wine takes more than a few minutes. If the heat is too high, the liquid will become too syrupy to enjoy, plus the alcohol will evaporate as a faster rate.
What you need to make mulled wine
- 1 x bottle (750ml) full-bodied red wine
- 2 x fresh oranges, sliced into rounds
- 2 x cinnamon sticks
- 2 x star anise
- 4 x cloves
- 2 x tbsp natural honey
- 1 x ¼ cup brandy (or liqueur of your choosing)
How to make mulled wine
- Combine ingredients in a large saucepan and stir a few times.
- Heat to a gentle simmer over low-medium heat (avoid bubbles), then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for a approx. 30 minutes to one hour. The longer it simmers, the stronger the flavours.
- Remove from heat, then discard loose ingredients before serving in your favourite mugs.
- Top with additional garnishes and enjoy!
Best Blinds for Insulation
If you're feeling the chill too often during winter, it might be worth investing in some energy efficient blinds (after all, you can't be making mulled wine every night!).
Believe it or not, up to 35% of the heat in your home can disappear via the windows and doors. So, even if you've got the heater cranked, your efforts could be in vain without the right blinds. Here are some of the best winter blinds that we offer.
Double Roller Blinds: With twice the functionality of a regular roller blind, double roller blinds are one of the most functional ways to manage heat and light in your home. Once installed, these insulating blinds have the ability to completely block the sun and light, filter warm sunshine through your windows and preserve warmth in your home.
Blockout Roman Blinds / Blockout Roller Blinds: Similar in appearance and functionality, these modern blinds can be incredibly energy efficient when custom made with blockout or blackout fabric! Choose these styles for large windows, as the simple, economical design makes them an affordable way to reduce energy bills throughout the year.
