Curtains and Blinds Trends Through The Decades

Curtains and Blinds Trends Through The Decades

From pastel curtains of the 50s, to the popularity of vertical blinds in the 90s, see what has (and hasn't) stood the test of time!

Brief history of blinds

While I won't disclose my real age, it's fair to say that I've seen plenty of blinds trends come and go over the years! From pastel curtains of the 50s, to the popularity of vertical blinds in the 90s, it's always interesting to see what styles come and go, and which ones have stood the test of time.

The 50s

It's made a resurgence over the years in the fashion world, but colour-blocking was once hugely popular for thick drapes and curtains. The 50s were characterised by bright, bold colours, like pink, turquoise, mint green and even yellow. When it came to patterns, exotic foliage and even space age shapes were pretty popular at the time, as naff as it sounds!

The 60s

Bright, neon colours and eye-catching patterns were all the rage during the 1960s, which I'm sure will come as a surprise to no one! Hippie culture was a huge influence at the time, which produced plenty of paisley patterns consisting of bright greens, yellows, oranges and bright reds.

The 70s

Cultural trends like psychedelia and disco made their way into homes during the 1970s, with loud primary colours and expressive patterns dominating the scene. Everything from rugs to window dressings were vibrant and loud, with futuristic, metallic shades even making an appearance in curtain and drape fabrics.

The 80s and 90s

These decades took a turn away from the loud and crazy colours of the past years. Instead, soft, pretty pastel fabrics complete with ruffles and frills were the norm. Stripes and geometric patterns were also popular, in addition to the colour combo of blue and white. It was also during this era that blinds (particularly verticals) finally became more popular than curtains.

2000s and 2010s

While minimalism has been on the scene for quite some time, it really made waves during the 20th and 21st century. Ever since its arrival, it has continued to dominate the design world everywhere from interiors to fashion.

It's this stripped back style that has greatly influenced a wide variety of products and styles that we currently have in our collection today, such as Roman blinds, vertical blinds and roller blinds. These styles have been popular choices in Australian homes for many years, all featuring a minimal, timeless design.

For modern products with minimalistic designs, look to vision blinds and vertisheer blinds, which have been introduced to the market over the last few years.

2021 and beyond

While we may not yet have flying cars, we do have motorised blinds! Automated blinds are blinds that are electronically controlled via a remote control, sensor, smartphone, tablet or even a third-party home-automation system for your convenience.

As for any emerging products, you'll have to watch this space!
