For most of us, a morning routine consists of nothing more than stumbling into the shower and then guzzling some coffee before running out the door.
So, what is a good morning routine? Well, the truth is, no one can tell you what constitutes the perfect routine for you, but you! We all operate incredibly differently, with some preferring to kick start the day with a workout, while others enjoy taking the time to sit down, read the paper and enjoy breakfast. Whether you're already a morning person or want to become one, here are a few morning routine ideas you can take on board.
Benefits of a morning routine
A well-established morning routine is said to do many things from boosting your mood to increasing productivity levels. Most importantly, some form of routine (no matter how small) can help get your day off to the best possible start.
How to kick start your morning routine
- Start the night before
A healthy morning routine starts before you even wake up for the day! To wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, try and get seven to nine hours of good quality sleep. A good night's sleep can be aided by winding down at least one hour before bed (steer clear of electronics), avoiding heavy meals, alcohol and caffeine, and ensuring your bedroom is as dark as possible.
Darkening the bedroom is a tried and true method of improving your quality of sleep. This is because light is an environmental cue that helps to set our body clock. When it's dark, our bodies produce the sleep hormone, melatonin, which helps us to get a good night's sleep. If it's too light, the quality of sleep will be disrupted. If your bedroom is currently too light at night, considering installing blinds made with blockout fabric like double roller blinds, standard single rollers or blockout Roman blinds. If you're not sure what fabric type is best for your home, have a look through our guide on choosing the right blinds fabric.
- Allow yourself time to rise and shine
If you're not an early-bird-gets-the-worm kinda person by nature, it can be a daily struggle to get out the door in a timely fashion. So, that's why it's important to set an alarm time that suits your morning speed.
Rather than expecting your body to go-go-go at a moment's notice, wake up a little earlier and enjoy starting the day at your own pace. The more you help your body and your mind through the waking up process, the better equipped you will be to take on the day!
- Let the light in
Soon after your alarm sounds, raise the blinds, rotate the shutters and fling open the curtains. With natural light filling the bedroom, this can help to wake your body and mind up in preparation for the day ahead.
Not only will the natural light wake your body up, but the simple act of getting out of bed to manually open the window treatments will too. Whatever you do, don't keep snoozing your alarm. Studies have shown that instead of giving you an extra energy boost, snoozing after your alarm goes off can actually increase tiredness.
- Go for H2O
For many of us, water is already an integral part of our morning routines in the form of a satisfying morning shower. But, how many of us think about rehydrating with something other than coffee first thing in the morning?
The period in which you're asleep is a long time for the body to go without any water, but many of us will go about our days without even realising that we're already dehydrated. A great way to start your morning is to drink at least one glass of water upon waking to rehydrate your body quickly.
Fun fact: The brain is over seventy per cent water, so hydration is also key for maintaining optimal brain activity. When you're adequately hydrated, your brain will be less fatigued, meaning you can enjoy a more productive day!
