Top tips for cleaning indoor blinds and windows
Regularly cleaning your indoor blinds is a great way to stop grime from building up. It's also an easy hack for extending the lifespan of your window treatments.
$ Low cleaning budget
Without looking in your cupboards, I can pretty much guarantee that you already have everything you need to make your windows sparkle. Simply mix one-part distilled vinegar with one-part hot water, then wipe it on your windows with a sponge. Once the surface grime has been removed, use a clean squeegee to wipe the window and give the glass a final rinse with an all-purpose cleaner and warm water. Then, just dry with a clean cloth.
Now that your windows are sparkling, move on to the window treatment. To clean horizontal or vertical blinds, simply give them a once over with a vacuum brush attachment, working your way down from the top of the blinds. Then, give them a wipe using a microfibre towel and a bowl of warm, soapy water. If you have fabric blinds, all you need to do is give them a vacuum from time to time, which can be easily done without taking the blinds down.
Another incredibly affordable way to clean plantation shutters and most popular indoor blinds like rollers, vertical blinds is use a sock. Simply put the sock on your hand and run it along any surface to pick up dust and create clean indoor blinds in a flash.
$$ Medium cleaning budget
If you're willing to spend a little more, it can be worth upgrading from vinegar and hot water and investing in a special cleaner. My tip: Consider how the product smells and its impact on the environment before you buy, as ammonia-based cleaners (like Windex) often have a harsh chemical smell that can be quite unpleasant in your home.
Aside from the smell, harsh chemicals in cleaning products can sometimes do more harm than good to the fabric of your indoor blinds. This is particularly true when it comes to blinds made from fabric (roller blinds, Roman blinds, vertical blinds or panel glide blinds). Whenever you are preparing to use a new product, read the manufacturer's advice and always spot test it first on an inconspicuous area of the window treatment.
$$$ High cleaning budget
If you're super pedantic about cleaning (and your budget allows), I'd also recommend buying a high-powered window vacuum, like a Karcher. With such a high-quality product, you can enjoy completely clean and streak free windows in a flash. No elbow grease required!
If you have curtains installed in your home, it might also be worth investing in a good quality steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment. This way, you don't have to take your curtains off the rod every single time you want to refresh them.
